St Petersburg is a lovely mid-sized town on the coast of Florida, with a very special garden that’s more than a century old. It’s famous Sunken Garden is a 6 hectare oasis, originally built by a visionary plumber who purchased the land in 1903 to devote to his gardening hobby. In 1999 the city government purchased the property.
There’s plenty to see, with more than 50,000 types of tropical plants, waterfalls and … flamingos. You can watch a cool video here of some of the new flamingos arriving at the gardens.
If you’re lucky enough to live in St Petersburg, you can become a member of the gardens. The website says:
Sunken Gardens provides garden tours, horticultural programs, special events, field trips, weddings, private and corporate rentals. Call 727-551-3102. Gardens may be closed due to inclement weather.
